How to Put a Bike Rack on a Jeep Wrangler – Step-by-Step Guide

The Jeep Wrangler is one of the most popular vehicles around for many outdoor enthusiasts. This is probably because it is versatile, durable, and rugged.

Not to mention, it provides you with different options for carrying bikes. You just need to mount a bike rack.

But how do you mount a bike rack on your jeep? Well, below are steps on how to put a bike rack on a jeep wrangler.

How to Put a Bike Rack on a Jeep Wrangler

Put a Bike Rack on Your Jeep Wrangler: Process

The way you install the bike rack will depend on the type of rack you have. Fortunately, for most types of racks, you don’t need to do a lot to the bike before attaching it. That said, let’s look at the different types of bike racks for a jeep wrangler and how to mount them.

Hitch Mount Rack Style

These types of racks are designed to attach directly to your jeep wrangler’s towing hitch. They work by cradling bikes behind the vehicle and are the easiest to install.

So, here are steps on how to install them:

Step One: Screw the Hitch Rack

Hitch racks are designed to be mounted underneath your Jeep’s trunk. Therefore, you might need to get underneath your car to install it.

To install the rack, you will need to slide a pole into the opening of your hitch. Next, screw a bolt through the opening and the rack. You can use a socket or regular wrench for ease of tightening the bolt.

Step Two: Fold the Bike Rack Down

Most hitch mounts are designed to fold up against the trunk. However, some tend to stick out similar to a trunk mount.

When it comes to folding mounts, you should start by unlocking the mount. Next, pull it down until it sits flat behind the trunk. Then, look for the grooves for your tires and fold them out. You can then load your bike onto the rack.

Spare Tire Rack Style

As the name suggests, this type of rack is designed to mount on your Jeep’s spare tire. Given that most Jeep Wranglers have this feature, spare tire racks are an excellent and affordable option for Jeep owners.

The best part is that most of these racks are quick and easy to install. Generally, there are 3 ways to mount spare tire racks. These include racks that bolt into the spare tire, those that strap onto the tire, and racks that allow both options.

Below are steps on how to put a bike rack on a Jeep Wrangler:

Step One: Remove the spare tire

The first step is to remove the spare tire from the tailgate of your Wrangler. Next, put the mounting plate over the top of the lug studs and pop out the center cap of your spare tire.

Step Two: Reinstall the Spare Tire

After popping out the center cap, the next step is to reinstall the tire back to the tire mounting bracket. Then, secure the spare tire with lug nuts.

Next, slip the bike rack over top of the mounting tongue.

Step Three: Install the Washer

The next step should be to install the washer onto the mounting handle of the bike rack. This should then be followed by the locking tab.

Next, thread the locking handle through the spare bike rack into the mounting tongue until it is completely secure.

Roof Rack Style

Roof racks work by making use of your Wrangler’s existing roof rack to offer a place for bikes to stand. This style is generally best suited for Jeeps with a hardtop.

However, it may not be the best choice for Jeep Wranglers with a soft top. Also, because Jeeps are tall vehicles, roof racks can make it hard to attach and remove the bikes.

When it comes to installation, it is straightforward. And here is how to go about it:

Step One: Install Cross Rails

The first step is to mount the cross rails in the rain gutters of your Wrangler. There are no modifications needed which makes the process simple.

Step Two: Drill through the Hard Top

This step only applies to individuals with a little bit older Jeep Wrangler. You will need to permanently modify the top of your Wrangler by drilling through it. Next, mount the crossbars on the hardtop.

Step Three: Mount the Bike Rack

Once you have the crossbars or cross rails installed, you can then proceed to install a bike rack.

Bottom Line

Mounting a bike rack on your Wrangler makes it easier for you to bring your bike along when going on a road trip. And as you can see, it is very easy to install a bike rack regardless of the style you choose.
