What Does The Tire Size Mean?

Most people go their entire lives without realizing what the numbers on the tire actually means. The first number is the width of the tire in millimeters. That means that a P215/65 R15 tire has a width of 215 millimeters. The second number is not a fixed width, but instead a ratio. This ratio represents how wide the side wall is relative to the tire width. of sidewall to width. So, a P215/65 R15 tire has a sidewall height of 140mm (215 * 0.65).

After that you will find a letter, usually ‘R’. This letter is used to indicate the tire’s performance. R is pretty much standard, while Y or Z-rated tires are ultra high performance.

The most familiar and final figure in the tire size is the tire’s internal diameter in inches. This means that a P215/65 R15 tire has a 15 inch internal diameter.

As you would expect, a given rim can take more than just one type of tire. A rim can generally take a tire with a slightly different width than what it originally had. There is much more room when it comes to the sidewall ratio, as that figure can vary somewhat widely and still be compatible with a given rim.

Properly Tightening The Bolts

The Nissan Maxima use 5 lug nuts. Just like any other car, these nuts have to be secured in a specific, crisscross pattern when you mount the wheel to the truck again. This information can generally be found in the vehicle’s user manual, but we put it here for you for convenience’s sake.

Tightening the lug nuts properly is very important. If they are not tight enough, the wheel could fall off. If you over-tighten the wheel, it will be hard to remove next time and can damage components.

The first step is to tighten the lugs with a normal wrench first. Make sure not to tighten the lug nuts down completely just yet. If you tighten them all the way in this step, it will be hard to get each lug torqued down to its proper level and you could end up with alignment issues.  So, for now just tighten each one of your lugs about half way.

Once you have all your lugs nuts on, then you can tighten them down with a torque wrench one by one to the proper ft lbs. All generations of Nissan Maxima use the same 99.5 ft lbs of for for the lug nuts.

Its important to ensure that your lug nuts are properly tightened. An easy way to do this is to drive for around 30 miles and then check the toque on your lug nuts. If any of them are loose, tighten them back down again and repeat the test. If after a second test any of the lug nuts come loose again, it means you probably have a warped rim and need to replace it.

When To Rotate Nissan Maxima Tires

Tires typically last around 75,000 miles or around 5 years (whichever comes first). After that, they need to be replaced. There are some cases where tires can last a lot longer, and there are certainly situations where ties won’t last nearly that long.

If you take the time to rotate your tires, then your tires will last a lot longer before you need to replace them. For a Nissan Maxima, the best interval to rotate your tires every 7,500 miles. Rotating your tires is easy to do. It’s just a matter of moving the front tires to the back and move the back tires to the front, but swap the left and right sides.

Rotating your tires is just another clear reason why you need to know your Nissan Maxima lug pattern. Also, when rotating your tires, you will have access to all the inner workings of each one of your wheels.

So, make sure to take a look at your brakes and other parts that are usually obscured by the wheel.

Conclusion
