Nissan Altima Lug Pattern (1993-2022)

The Nissan Altima is a reliable midsize car that has more power than a Sentra but with many of the luxury amenities found in the Maxima. With a powerful range of engines and a solid reliability record, the Nissan Altima is an easy choice for families. There will come a time, however, in which you will need to know your Nissan Altima Lug Pattern.

If you have a Nissan Altima that was made before 2001, then it uses a lug pattern of 4×4.5 inches (4×114.3mm). These earlier Altimas only used 4 lug nuts. If your Nissan Altima was made after 2001 it has a lug pattern of 5×4.5 inches (5×114.3mm). These newer Altimas use 5 lug nuts. Both versions of the Nissan Altima have the same 2.6 inch (66.1 mm) center bore and use M12 x 1.25 lug nuts that need to be tightened with 83 ft lbs of force.

This information, while useful, does not tell you everything that you need to know. In this article, we will outline the Nissan Altima lug pattern in more detail for each generation. We will also elaborate on the exact type and size of the lugs used on a Nissan Altima. We will also cover the center bore hub and the torque specifications of the bolts. Finally, we will tell you about all the various tire and rim combinations that came with each engine option.

Wheel Fitment Specifications Per Generation

To be able to put a wheel on your car, you are going to need to know more than just the Nissan Altima lug pattern. While the information above such as the center bore diameter, wheel tightening torque, whether lug nuts or bolts are used, and the thread size of the bolts is useful, you will also need to know the tire and rim sizes.

1993 – 1997

For the early years, the Nissan Altima had a 2.4 I4 150 HP engine that used a tire tire size of 205/60R15 and a rim size of 6Jx15 ET45.

Properly Tightening The Bolts

The Nissan Altimas use 5 lug nuts but they have to be tightened in a specific, crisscross pattern. They also have to be tightened down with a specific amount of pressure. You can, as always, find this information in your Nissan Altima user manual, but it’s nice to have everything all in one place, so we put it here for you as well.

Step 1: Tighten the lugs with a hand wrench.

NOTE: It’s important to not tighten the lug nuts down all the way just yet. If you do, it will be really hard to get your lug nuts all torqued down to their proper level. So, just tighten them down about half way at first to get them all on.

Step 2: Use a proper torque wrench and tighten your Nissan Altima lug nuts to the appropriate amount of pressure. For the Nissan Altima, the lugs need to be tightened to 83 ft lbs.

Then, you need to perform a lug nut tightening test on your Nissan Altima. This can be done by tightening your lug nuts to 140 ft lbs and driving for about 30 miles. Then, check the torque on your lug nuts again. If any of them are loose, tighten them down again and repeat the test. If any of your lug nuts are loose after that, then you more than likely have a warped rim that needs to be replaced.

When To Rotate Nissan Altima Tires

The tires on most cars generally last about 75,000 miles or 5 years or so. Remember, even if your tires are low miles, time can still damage them.  The fact of the matter is that after a few years, tires will start to dry rot. When this happens, they need to be replaced, even if they don’t have many miles on them.

If you rotate your Nissan Altima tires regularly, they will last longer than if you didn’t. This comes down to the fact that the wheels in a car are not mounted perfectly straight. So, they were out inconsistently. The effects of this unavoidable problem are reduced by rotating the tires.

For the Nissan Altima, it’s best to rotate the tires every 7,500 miles or so. Rotating tires is not a hard thing to do. All you have to do is move the rear tires to the front and move the front tires to the rear. While you are doing so, also swap the left and right sides.

Conclusion

The Nissan Altima is a relatively powerful midsize car that is known for reliability, performance, and its vast suite of amenities. No matter how reliable your car is, one way or the other you are going to eventually need to know your Nissan Altima Lug Pattern.
