Mazda Miata Bolt Pattern (1990-2022)

The Mazda MX-5, or Mazda Miata, is an absolutely tiny yet surprisingly powerful sports car. The MX-5 is known to be extremely fun to drive and has some of the best handling characteristics found on a car of that size. Regardless of how fast you can zip around a corner, you will eventually need to know the Mazda Miata bolt pattern.

If your Mazda MX-5 was made between 1990 and 2005, then it’s going to have a bolt pattern of 4×3.9 inches (4x100mm) and a 2.13 inch (54.1 mm) center bore.

This Miata has just 4 lug nuts that have a thread size of M12 x 1.5. These lug nuts need to be tightened down to between 65 and 87 ft lbs. If, however, your Mazda MX-5 was made between 2006 and 2015, then it has a bolt pattern of 5×4.5 inches (5×114.3mm) and a center bore of 2.64 inches (67.1mm). Thread size for this Miata is M12 x 1.5 and there are 5 lug nuts that must also be tightened down to between 65 and 87 ft lbs. If your Mazda MX-5 was produced between 2016 and now have a bolt pattern of 4×3.9 inches (4x100mm) and use 4 lug nuts with a thread size of M12 x 1.5 that need to be tightened to between 80 and 108 ft lbs. For this range of years, the Mazda MX-5 Miata has a center bore of 2.13 inches (54.1 mm).

While it may sound like we covered everything, there is still a lot more you need to know. In this article, we will go over the Mazda Miata bolt pattern in more detail for each generation. After that, we will also give you links for the exact lug nuts to use on your Mazda MX-5 Miata. Then, we are going to discuss the center bore and torque specs for each generation in detail. Finally, we will inform you on the various tire and rim sizes that are available with each generation’s different engine configurations.

Mazda MX-5 Miata Wheel Fitment Guide

Remember, if you are needing to do any kind of tire or wheel work on your car, then you are going to need to know a lot more than just the Mazda Miata bolt pattern. We have detailed the various factors above such as center bore diameter, wheel tightening torque, lug nut size, and the thread size of the bolts. You will, however, need to know each tire and rim option that came with each engine configuration of each Mazda MX-5 Miata generation.

1990 – 1998

If your Mazda Miata has the tiny-but-reasonably-powerful 1.6L 115 HP engine, then it uses a tire size of either 185/60R14,185/55R15, 195/50R15, or 205/50R15. Rim sizes for this Miata are either 5.5Jx14 ET45, 6Jx15 ET45, 6Jx15 ET45, or 6.5Jx15 ET45

If, however, you have the slightly larger 1.8L 133 HP engine, then your Miata uses a tire size of either 185/60R14, 195/50R15, 185/55R15, 205/50R15, or 205/45ZR16 mounted on either a 6Jx14 ET40, 6Jx15 ET40, 6Jx15 ET40, 6.5Jx15 ET42, 7Jx16 ET38 rim.

Properly Tightening The Bolts

The Mazda MX-5 Miata’s use 4 to 5 lug nuts depending on the generation. These lug nuts must be tightened in a specific, crisscross pattern and to a specific torque level.  You can also find this in the Mazda Miata user manual, but we put it here for you along with everything else you will need regarding the Mazda Miata bolt pattern.

It is so, so important to ensure that your lug nuts tightened properly. Remember, if they are too tight, components could be damaged and it can make your wheel very difficult to remove at a later time. On the other hand, if you don’t tighten the lug nuts enough it could cause unexpected vibrations that could become very serious very quickly.

First, you need to tighten the lugs with a hand wrench. It’s important to not tighten the lug nuts down all the way just yet. If you do, it will be really hard to get your lug nuts all torqued down to their proper level. So, make sure to just tighten them down about half way at first to get them all on.

After that, you are going to have to have a torque wrench so you can tighten your Mazda MX-5 Miata lug nuts to the appropriate amount of pressure. This is why its good to know the Miata bolt pattern and torque specs. For the most recent Mazda Miata, the lugs need to be tightened to 80 and 108 ft lbs.

Then, it’s a good idea to perform a travel test on your Mazda MX-5 Miata lug nuts. A travel test is something that is easy to do and important for your safety. Tighten your lug nuts 80 -108 ft lbs and then drive for around 30 miles or so.

Finally, check the torque on each of your lug nuts again. If any of them are loose, re-tighten them and repeat the travel test. If, after that, any of your lug nuts are loose, then that means that the rim is warped and needs to be replaced.

When To Rotate Mazda Miata Tires

The tires on most cars generally last around 75,000 miles or 5 years, whichever comes first. And you may be thinking to yourself, ‘If my tires have low miles on them, then how could they be bad?’ The unfortunate fact is that after a few years, tires will start to dry rot. When this happens, they need to be replaced, even if they don’t have many miles on them.

It’s never fun when tires wear out and need to be replaced, but the good news is if you rotate your Mazda MX-5 Miata tires at regular intervals, they are going to last way longer than they would if you didn’t. This comes down to the simple fact that the wheels in a car are not mounted perfectly straight and parallel to each other. That, of course, is the goal, and car markers so that tires are as straight as possible, but it’s not perfect.

It’s best to rotate a Mazda MX-5 Miata every 7,500 miles or so. The good news is that tire rotation is not a hard thing to do. Simply move the rear tires to the front and move the front tires to the rear. While you are doing so, also swap the left and right sides.

Conclusion

The Mazda Miata is America’s favorite tiny import sports car. The Miata is well-known for being extremely fun to drive and has really fantastic handling considering its size. Regardless of how fast your mouse-sized sports car is, you will eventually need to know the Mazda MX-5 bolt pattern.

If your Mazda MX-5 Miata was made between 1990 and 2005, it is going to have a bolt pattern of 4×3.9 inches (4x100mm) and a center bore of 2.13 inches (54.1 mm). This Miata has 4 lug nuts that have a thread size of M12 x 1.5 that need to be tightened down to 65-87 ft lbs. If, on the other hand, your Mazda Miata was produced between 2006 and 2015, then it got a bolt pattern of 5×4.5 inches (5×114.3mm) a center bore of 2.64 inches (67.1mm). Thread size for this generation is M12 x 1.5 and a total of 5 lug nuts are used. The torque specs for this version of the Miata are 65 to 87 ft lbs. The most recent Mazda Miata made between 2016 and now has a bolt pattern of 4×3.9 inches (4x100mm) and uses 4 lug nuts that have a thread size of M12 x 1.5 that need to be tightened to 80-108 ft lbs.
