So, What Does The Tire Size Mean?
The first number in the size is the tire’s width (in millimeters). So, that means that
a P245/55 R17 tire has a width of 245 millimeters. The second number on the tire is the ratio of sidewall to tire width. So, that means that a P245/55 R17 tire has a sidewall height of 140mm (245 * 0.55).
After that is a letter. The letter indicates a tire’s performance letter. R is more-or-less standard, while Y or Z-rated tires are ultra high performance.
The final figure that most people are already familiar with is the tire’s internal diameter in inches. So, a P245/55 R17 tire has a 17 inch internal diameter.
Generally speaking, a wheel can accept more than just one type of tire. Well, you are correct! Generally speaking, a rim can take a tire with a slightly different width than the original tire had. When it comes to the side wall ratio, there is more wiggle room.
Properly Tightening The Bolts
Dodge Journeys use 5 lug nuts. You have to tighten these lug nuts in a specific, crisscross pattern when you put the rim to the car again. You can find this in your manual, but we took the time to put it here for you.
WARNING: Make sure to the lug nuts are properly tightened. If you tighten them too much, your wheel could fall off when you are driving! If you over-tighten the wheel, it can make it hard to get off next time and it can damage components.
Step 1: Tighten the lugs with a hand wrench about half way.
Note: It’s important to not tighten the lug nuts down all the way just yet. If you tighten them down now it will be hard to get each lug torqued down to its proper level. So, just tighten the lugs about half way.
Step 2: Tighten them with a torque wrench to the proper ft lbs. The Dodge Journey use the same 99.5 ft lbs of lug tightening force.
Also, its important to do a basic travel test. So, drive your car for about 30 miles and then check your lug nuts. If any of them are loose, tighten them down and do the test again. After the second test, check your lug nuts again. If any of them come out, if mean your rim is more than likely warped. If that’s the case, you’ll need to replace it.
When To Rotate Dodge Journey Tires
Tires last about 5 years or 75,000 miles, whichever comes first. After this amount of time, they need to be replaced.
You might think miles is all that matters, but after a while, the rubber that the tire is made out of will start to decompose. There are cases in which this can happen a lot sooner, and there are certainly times where it can happen a lot later, but eventually, you are going to need to replace your tires.
Long before your tires wear out, you need to rotate them. If you rotate your tires regularly, they will last a lot longer before you need to replace them.
For the Dodge Journey, it’s best to rotate your tires every 7,500 miles. Rotating your tires is simple. All you have to do is move the front tires to the back and move the back tires to the front, but swap the left and right sides while you are doing it.
Rotating your tires or working on your brakes is just another example of why it’s important to know your Dodge Journey lug pattern. Another important thing to consider is the fact that when you are rotating your tires, you will have access to all the inner workings of each one of your wheels.
This gives you time to take a look at your brakes and other things that are usually obscured by the wheel’s presence.
The Dodge Journey can seat up to 7 people, but that doesn’t mean much if you are having tire or wheel problems. All the space in the world wont do much for you if you need to get a replacement wheel but don’t know your Dodge Journey bolt pattern.
All Dodge Journeys use a bolt pattern of 5×5 inches (5x127mm) and have 5 lug nuts that have a thread size of M12 x 1.5. The lug nuts on the Dodge Journey need to be tightened to 100 ft lbs and all Dodge Journeys have a center bore of 2.8 inches (71.6mm).
