Fifth Wheel Hitch vs. Gooseneck Hitch
What’s the difference between the two? You might be wondering. Well, to clarify, a gooseneck hitch is designed to use a ball that’s meant to engage with a specially made coupler located on the trailer. A 5-th wheel hitch, on the other hand, is designed to use a kingpin.
Gooseneck hitches are commonly used on horse trailers. Fifth wheel hitches, on the other hand, are recommended when safety is a top priority.
Now that we’re clear on those key pointers and differences, it’s only appropriate that we share some top 5-th wheel hitch examples with you.
Different Types of 5th Wheel Hitches
We have already covered the difference between a gooseneck hitch and a standard 5-th wheel hitch. But as it turns out, there are quite a few different types worth keeping in mind. And they’re as follows.
The 2-way pivot head is the most common type available nowadays. It’s specifically designed against an incline even when the trailer is yet to reach a grade change.
The 4-way pivot, on the other hand, is a unit designed to enable you to pivot from one side to another. Most truck drivers like this hitch type owing to the fact that it comes in handy when driving on uneven surfaces.
Buying Guide for 5th Wheel Hitches
This section is a bit highly detailed but nonetheless, we’ve tried to make it as interesting as possible. At the same time, we’ve made sure to include all the details that matter so you can buy your new wheel hitch with extra confidence.
The Kind of Truck You’re Planning to Tow
You want to make sure that the hitch you settle for is compatible with your truck. So, don’t just take the next guy’s word for it. Always double-check the details with your user manual.
Some key details you want to clarify before you make a purchase include the length of your truck bed. In particular, if your truck bed is below 8-ft, you’ll need a slider fifth wheel hitch along with an extended pin box.
Basically, if your hitch is properly installed, it should always sit near the rear axle (in front). Other truck-related factors to keep in mind include:
Whether it has a plastic liner or not?
If that’s the case you’ll need to drill a hole for the hitch.
Can you spot some pucks in the bed?
If that’s the case, be sure to get a hitch designed with them in mind.
What brand is your truck?
Some brands have hitches specifically made for them although you can always find universal ones as well.
Do You Need a Sliding Fifth Wheel Hitch?
Standard Fixed vs. Air Ride Hitches, Which One to Choose
Standard fixed hitches are the most common types in retail. But as the name suggests, these don’t come with any cushioning. You’d need to invest in padded pin boxes for them.
That said, standard fixed hitches are pretty affordable and generally light in weight.
As for the air ride hitches, this is the type you go for if you know you’re going to face some bumpy roads. They typically come with a built-in anti-shock system which makes them easy to install and dependable in the long run.
On the flip side, though, air ride 5th wheel hitches are quite expensive in addition to being difficult to move from truck to truck.
Other Equally Important Factors to Consider
(1) Installation – The easier the hitch is to install, the better. If possible go for a product that comes with an installation kit.
(2) Capacity – Be sure to check and confirm that your hitch of choice can accommodate the weight of your trailer. It’s dangerous to drive with an incorrect hitch.
(3) Exterior – If you care about looks, we’d suggest going for a hitch with a fiberglass exterior. That would ensure you get a glossy shine at all the time.
No matter the 5th wheel hitch you settle for, it’s important to make sure you go for one with an articulating head. Most importantly, it should be easy to install in addition to having the ability to minimize vibration.
That said, it’s our hope that you’ll find something that matches your expectations on the reviews above.
